“New Rose” is credited as the first British punk single, released in 1976 by chaos-progenitors The Damned.
The lyric focuses on the excitement of being free to do something new, while the song’s opening homage to The Shangri-Las’ “Leader of the Pack” mirrors the band’s interests for the melodramatic anthems of Sixties pop.
Their sound also pioneered the foundations of the Goth and Emo subcultures. Meanwhile, vocalist Dave Vanian’s dramatic croon performance looks set a blueprint for many lead singers – like Peter Murphy or Nick Cave – and continues to echo through today’s acts, from My Chemical Romance to Yungblud.
