An homage to eight members of the Portuguese Women’s Republican League, a feminist association founded in 1909 in Lisbon. They were Ana de Castro Osório, Maria Veleda, Beatriz Paes Pinheiro de Lemos, Maria Clara Correia Alves, Sofia Quintino, Adelaide Cabete, Carolina Beatriz Ângelo, and Maria do Carmo Joaquina Lopes. These suffragettes challenged patriarchal power; notably, Carolina Beatriz Ângelo became the first woman to vote in Portugal, in May 1911. For more on her, go here.
“Suffragette City“ is a clear reference to the glam-rock 1972 classic David Bowie track.
These shirts are screen-printed using water-based inks in Black, Violet Blue, and Magenta Red.
