The widely popular song Tainted Love has had many lives.
First recorded in 1964 by American soul singer Gloria Jones, the record was a commercial flop for nearly a decade until it became a dancefloor killer in the UK’s Northern Soul club scene. Jones re-recorded the song in her ’76 album Vixen, but it failed again to hit the charts. Instead, she went on to write and work for Motown’s biggest acts like Marvin Gaye or Diana Ross.
In 1981, synth-pop duo Soft Cell covered Tainted Love, becoming an international smash hit.
