Melodrama was a big part of the music industry, long before Goth entered the room.
In the 1950s and 1960s, artists mixed subversiveness with proto-gothy Pop through the era’s of “Teen Tragedy Songs” or “Tear Jerkers”.
Sixties Girl Groups like the Crystals and The Shangri-las generated a spectrum of emotions for the teen market, wrapping sweet pop songs with quite dark imagery, sinister undertones and grotesque and macabre lyrics, that even touched abusive relationship.

On the other hand, in the 1959 hit song “Oh Carol!” by Neil Sedaka, melodramatically threatens to die his girlfriend ever leaves him. Guess what: Carol (who was actually award-winning songwriter Carole King) did eventually leave Neil, and he didn’t die from it.
